A few months ago, out of convenience, I combined our study of Chapters 4 and 5 as both chapters were part of the same story but had different points to make. In this week’s study, we combined chapters 15 and 16 because they tell the same story and flow one to another.
Divisions like this were usually made at the end of scrolls or where there were natural blank passages, but during the 13th Century, both Cardinal Hugo de Sancto Caro and Archbishop Stephen Langton developed different methods to split the bible into sections.
Stephen Langton (~1150 – 9 July 1228) was an English Cardinal and Archbishop of Canterbury between 1207 and his death in 1228. his controversial election formed one of the major disputes between King John of England and Pope Innocent III that led to the revolt that produced Magna Carta in 1215. His method is the most used around the world, splitting the bible into Chapters and then smaller ‘verses’.
This has not been without controversy and debate, as a great many sentences are divided amongst multiple verses and many chapters divide subjects or extend subjects by one or two sentences.
Isaac Newton and Thomas Jefferson are both supposed to have written their own divisions of the bible.
